In almost every claim for civil damages in the United States, someone claims that an insurance policy provides coverage. So, to get virtually any commercial case settled, it is critical to determine whether insurance carriers should participate and, if so, to what extent. Unique among mediators, and of incalculable value to his clients, Jeff has devoted himself to the mastery of insurance law and the culture of negotiating with insurance companies.
In 2003-2004, Jeff was Chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee in the ABA's Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS). Jeff's knowledge of insurance law was so impressive that he was approached by the Chair of the Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee (ICLC) in TIPS with concerns that very few mediators possess a sufficient understanding of insurance law to mediate and ultimately settle complex insurance disputes. At the behest of the Chair, in February 2004, Jeff produced a course, "Advanced Mediation Training for Insurance Coverage Disputes," for 16 experienced mediators nationwide. Professor Peter Robinson of Pepperdine University School of Law team taught this course with Jeff. Later in 2004, TIPS presented Jeff with an award for developing and conducting one of the most outstanding and useful Continuing Legal Education programs of the year. Jeff is currently appointed to the TIPS Long-Range Planning Committee.
For 2005 Jeff has been asked to produce a CLE panel on Mediation for Insurance Staff Counsel, to be presented at the TIPS midyear meeting in New Orleans, and one on Mediation Advocacy for the TIPS Fall Meeting in San Francisco.
While many mediators are unprepared to tackle difficult and complex insurance coverage questions, Jeff teaches courses in these areas, and his courses win national awards.
